StopBullying.gov defines bullying as “unwanted, aggressive behavior among school aged children that involves a real or perceived power imbalance. The behavior is repeated, or has the potential to be repeated, over time. Both kids who are bullied and who bully others may have serious, lasting problems.

In order to be considered bullying, the behavior must be aggressive and include:

  • An Imbalance of Power: Kids who bully use their power—such as physical strength, access to embarrassing information, or popularity—to control or harm others. Power imbalances can change over time and in different situations, even if they involve the same people.
  • Repetition: Bullying behaviors happen more than once or have the potential to happen more than once.

Bullying includes actions such as making threats, spreading rumors, attacking someone physically or verbally, and excluding someone from a group on purpose.”

 

Wikipedia.org defines martial arts are codified systems and traditions of combat practices, which are practiced for a variety of reasons: self-defense, competition, physical health and fitness, entertainment, as well as mental, physical, and spiritual development.

Although the term martial arts has become associated with the fighting arts of eastern Asia, it originally referred to the combat systems of Europe as early as the 1550s. The term is derived from Latin, and means “arts of Mars”, the Roman god of war. Some authors have argued that fighting arts or fighting systems would be more appropriate on the basis that many martial arts were never “martial” in the sense of being used or created by professional warriors.

 

To Surmise:

Being that martial arts is a form of self-defense, in which disciplines respect and a code of honor in each student, whether it be a child, teenager, or adult, it is highly regarded as a self-confidence and self- esteem builder, strengthens character, teaches you right from wrong, and also strengthens the mind and body in every human being. I strongly recommend any and all victims of bullying to pursue a basic knowledge of martial art skills to self-defend yourself should the need arise when being bullied. It will help you not only defend yourself, but also will strengthen your physique and mental well being, which I think all children, teenagers, and adults who have been bullied should know.

For those who are in their adulthood now and having social, communicative, and lasting mental side effects from being bullied when they were younger, you are NEVER too old to start martial arts. Do not use that as an excuse. I was in my late 20s when I started martial arts; I wish I would have started when I was a kid. What I have learned, developed, and maintained now, I wish I would have known when I was younger and being bullied. It does help; it will save you. You will become the strongest, fiercest, and quickest person  – on the inside, and not just on the outside – you will ever know. Learn it, live it, and love it!
